PASIGHAT, May 26: A church has been destroyed, which was allegedly constructed at a Community Burial Ground at Pasighat GTC colony.

According to report, local people had set an ultimatum of 15 days to the encroachers to free the land.

The local people of the area lodged a written complaint with the East Siang Deputy Commissioner urging early action against the encroachers. Accordingly, the district administration dealt with the case and conducted hearing regarding the land dispute on April 19 last.

District administration sources informed that the disputed portion falls under government notified land and the encroachers, during the hearing could not produce any document in support of their claim/occupation. “Such anti-social activities do not augur well for communal harmony in our state,” ACF’s representation submitted to Parliamentary Secretary Home, said. ACF sought his intervention into the matter before any escalation of the situation.

ACF said that an FIR was lodged with local police station against the culprits but police have not been cooperative and have not taken any action so far. The district administration should intervene the matter and help to reconstruct the church, it added.

Adi Baptist Union vehemently condemned the incident and described it as a well planned act.

“Let us not show our disrespect to places of worship like church, mosque, mandir,” ABU said in a release.

The union, in a press release, said that the union is tightening belt to launch the third phase of “Operation Clean Drive” to drive out the illegal immigrants from the district as regular inflow of immigrants is posing serious threat to the socio-economic development of the local people.

The union earlier fixed to start their operation from March 9 last, but due to some unavoidable reasons it was rescheduled from first week of the next month.

Stating that ‘Inner Line Regulation, 1873’ has not been effectively enforced in the state, the student leaders alleged that the government machinery has failed to check illegal entrance of the Bangladeshi and other foreign nationals into Arunachal territory.

The AEDSU already submitted representation to the district administration and appealed all sections of local people to put their efforts together to carry out their operation successfully.
