India lost an icon

With the death of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa an era has ended. The iconic Jayalalithaa was buried on Tuesday in a sandalwood casket next to the memorial of her mentor, MG Ramachandran at Chennai’s Marina Beach. Last rites were performed by the politician’s long-time companion Sasikala Natarajan, who also received the national flag that had draped Ms Jayalalithaa’s body. Her rise to political stardom from film world was as enigmatic as her death. She was admitted to hospital in September month with complaint of fever and dehydration. But she never completely recovered from it and finally succumbed to the death.
But she will always be fondly remembered for various reasons. For her supporters, Jayalalithaa will remain as Amma and a source of inspiration for them. Even though critics never lost an opportunity to pin her down, she won hearts of her supporters and emerged as a powerful politicians in a male dominated country like India. Also known as the Iron Lady, she initiated a number of pro-poor schemes in Tamil Nadu which made her the ‘God of the people.’ This is said to be one of the reasons why people were so attached to Jayalalithaa, whether his party men or the general public. She came up with several schemes in favour of the poor people of Tamil Nadu during her reign. While Amma canteens provide breakfast and dinner at just Rs 5 per plate, Amma salt is a common product at homes in the state. She was ‘worshiped’ by the supporters. Now the onus will be on second rung AIADMK leader lead by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister O Panneerselvam to take forward her vision and continue the process of pro-poor initiatives started by late Jayalalithaa.
